Why Perimenopause Changed My Skin and My Breakouts | Jimi Smith, Livyond
Why Perimenopause Changed My Skin, and My Breakouts
I’ve struggled with breakouts for more than 20 years. It first showed up in my early twenties, and like so many women, I spent years trying to figure out why my skin seemed to have a mind of its own. Then I entered perimenopause, and everything changed again. Here’s what it taught me, and the barrier-first thinking behind Livyond.
It first showed up in my early twenties, and like so many women, I spent years trying to figure out why my skin seemed to have a mind of its own. Some months it was calm. Other months, I would wake up with painful cysts that seemed to appear overnight.
Around that same time, I became fascinated with skin. I became a licensed aesthetician and spent the next decade treating clients who were just as frustrated as I had been. My approach was different from many traditional practices: rather than relying on aggressive treatments or stripping the skin with harsh products, I focused on supporting the skin’s natural barrier and helping it function the way it was designed to.
Time after time, I watched healthier skin begin with a healthier barrier.
That philosophy has stayed with me ever since.
The hormonal breakouts I’d dealt with for years didn’t disappear. They evolved.
Suddenly, I wasn’t just dealing with acne. My skin was becoming drier, thinner, more reactive, and less resilient than it had ever been. I had deep hormonal breakouts along my jawline while, at the same time, fine lines were becoming more noticeable, and products I’d tolerated for years suddenly left my skin feeling irritated.
I remember standing in front of the mirror, thinking:
How can I still be breaking out, and now getting wrinkles?
As an aesthetician, I understood skin. As a woman in perimenopause, I realized I needed to understand it all over again.
Perimenopause doesn’t just change your hormones. It changes your skin.
Most acne advice is written for oily teenage skin. But perimenopausal skin has different needs. As estrogen declines, your skin naturally produces less oil, loses moisture more quickly, makes less collagen, and has a harder time maintaining a healthy barrier, while fluctuating hormones can still trigger inflammatory breakouts. Relative to that drop in estrogen, androgens take the wheel, the same signal that ran the show in your teens.
That means the deep, no-head cysts on the chin and jaw, patterned around your cycle. And at the very same time, the estrogen that kept your skin plump and resilient is leaving, so it turns dry, thin, and reactive. No wonder so many women feel like they’re fighting two completely different skin concerns at once.
I wasn’t failing at my own craft. I was facing a problem with two doors, and almost everything on the shelf was built to open only one.
The answer wasn’t stronger acne products. It wasn’t more exfoliation. It wasn’t trying to dry my skin out.
It was the same lesson I’d been teaching clients for years, only now I had to learn to apply it to my own changing skin.
Healthy skin starts with a healthy skin barrier.
That realization became one of the driving philosophies behind Livyond. We didn’t set out to create another anti-aging line, or another acne line. We set out to create skincare that supports women through the unique changes life brings, products that respect the skin barrier, deliver meaningful ingredients without unnecessary irritation, and help women feel confident in their skin again.
Because when your skin changes, your skincare should change with it.
That’s the whole idea behind Livyond, the system I helped formulate. It’s built around the barrier, not against it: it clears without stripping.
For me it was three steps: a Purifying Cleanser that clears without leaving my face tight, a Vitamin C Brightening Serum with niacinamide to help calm the look of breakouts and even out the marks they leave behind, and a Hyaluronic Restoration Cream to rebuild the barrier underneath. That’s where I’d tell most women to start, because it’s what I did myself.
Purifying Cleanser
Lifts oil and grime without that squeaky, stripped-tight feeling.
Vitamin C Brightening Serum
Niacinamide + gentle vitamin C to settle the inflamed look, balance oil and fade the marks old cysts leave behind.
Hyaluronic Restoration Cream
Barrier-first hydration (hyaluronic acid + squalane) so skin feels less tight and holds water better.
Firming Cream
For firmness and glow on thinning skin. Great on the neck and under the eyes, too.
The three steps above are what I used. In the winter I add the Firming Cream, step four, for firmness and glow, and I keep it on my neck and under my eyes year‑round.
I wasn’t the only one who felt ambushed by this, and I’m not the only one it’s helped. Real women describe the exact same thing:
“I feel like a teenager again. My skin had been clear for years… and now, suddenly, it’s out of control.”
r/Perimenopause“I have extremely dry, sensitive skin that is highly prone to redness, so I’m reluctant to try anything harsher.”
r/Menopause“I wish I’d been given something like this in my 20s, instead of Accutane followed by decades of burning my face off with harsh actives.”
r/PerimenopauseFor me it wasn’t overnight, and I won’t pretend it was. By about week three the deep chin ones came up less often, and the ones that did come up looked less angry. By week eight the thing I was watching wasn’t new breakouts, it was the marks the old ones left. Your skin isn’t my skin, so your timeline won’t be either.
But the week I stopped stripping my face was the week it finally stopped fighting me.
I’m not going to hand you a stranger’s stock photo. This is me, before and after I stopped fighting my skin and started calming it. Left is a typical breakout week. Right is where I landed. Unretouched, because I’d know if it wasn’t.

“As an aesthetician, I understood skin. As a woman in perimenopause, I had to understand it all over again, and it came back to the same truth I’d taught for twenty years: healthy skin starts with a healthy barrier. That’s the skincare I couldn’t find, so I helped formulate it.”
